THEME: Not by Might, nor by power, but by my Spirit says the Lord.
The Lord has endowed the leadership of ECWA with “special wisdom.” I called it special wisdom because of the kind of themes that they are coming up with every year. They would always observe circumstances in the world, our dear country Nigeria, our families, schools, and churches etc, before coming up with a theme for the year. These themes were meant to guide ECWA Pastors, churches, Fellowship groups and members of ECWA throughout the year, so that we could focus on the observed circumstances and be encouraged as a denomination. For this year 2020, the theme is taking from Zechariah 4:6, “Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit says the Lord.” Let’s begin by taken a brief look at the background of the book of Zechariah.
The Author
Zechariah 1:1 identifies the author of the Book of Zechariah as the Prophet Zechariah. The name “Zechariah” means “God remembered.” Some 28 men bear this name in the Bible; the best known is the prophet who with Haggai (Ezra 5:1; 6:14) encouraged the rebuilding of the temple in 520 BC. Not much is known about Zechariah’s life other than what may be inferred from the book. It has been speculated that his grandfather Iddo was the head of a priestly family who returned with Zerubbabel, and that Zechariah may himself have been a priest as well as a prophet.
The Purpose of the book
 The chief purpose of Zechariah (and Haggai) was to rebuke the people of Judah and to encourage and motivate them to complete the rebuilding of the temple (Zec. 4:8–10; Hag 1–2), though both prophets were clearly interested in spiritual renewal as well. The focus of the book is Jerusalem, which is named over forty times in the book, and the key text is, “I am zealous for Jerusalem and for Zion with great zeal” (1:4). God also requires repentance, a turning away from sin towards faith in Him (Zechariah 1:2–6).
